Hollywood's Annual Golden Globes kicked off the red carpet award season for 2012! Let's have a peek at the hairstyle trends that are taking shape in the New Year!
My favourite looks of the evening both had a retro vibe about them. Nicole Richie's up-do created a simply gorgeous profile, and the detailing kept the look from falling into your "standard high ponytail" category. Zooey Deschanel's high impact volume and shine, coupled with defined sideburns gave her a unique yet classic edge. When creating looks like these, the softness of the bangs is important, so whilst plenty of hairspray is necessary to keep the volume and shape in place, avoid spraying the fringe so the look remains natural around the face, rather than stiff and over-styled.
Natural, loose waves are always a red carpet favourite, but I selected these lovely ladies to demonstrate what a difference the colour and tone of the hair can make! Besides slight variances in the parts and textures, these looks are all essentially created using the same techniques, yet their colour and final finishes give them individuality. To get a more tousled texture, like Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Biel, you would back comb a bit more through the lengths after setting the hair with tongs, as opposed to Madonna's finger combed waves or Anne Hathaway's more polished finish, where a paddle brush smoothes the lengths and gives loads of shine.
A soft, textured side-chignon was another popular style this evening. Again, the tone of the hair and final placement of the fringe and chignon are what sets these ladies apart from each other. My personal favourite of this group is Charlize Theron, because her romantic texture is so well complemented by a perfectly placed headband. Who gets your vote..Charlie, Emma Stone or Kate Winslet?
Back and away from the face is always a good choice for the hair when another element of your look is bringing the drama, be it lip colour, (i.e. Angelina Jolie,) a bold, bright gown, (a la Natalie Portman,) or an unconventional hair colour, (like Kelly Osbourne!) Keeping the hair simple and pulled back in this fashion allows you to make a statement, but keeps the look chic and polished at the same time.
The look-alike award goes to Mila Kunis and Rooney Mara! Their deep side parts and slicked styles were strikingly similar from the front. Thankfully, Mila softened the look with a chignon, whilst Rooney opted for a harder version and left her short hair to spike a bit out the back.
Kudos to Michelle Williams and Tilda Swinton for the beautiful and feminine touches that kept their short styles pretty rather than boyish. Tilda's gentle waves off-set her shaved sides in just the right way, and Michelle's headband was a great choice to dress up her adorable pixie cut.
