Emmy Awards 2013 Hairstyles

The Emmy Awards 2013 were a blast! I could hardly wait to see who’d win what award and of course, there’s always the Red Carpet and the fashion to look forward to. Admittedly, we didn’t see any particularly crazy or daring hairstyles at the Emmys this year, but some of our all-time fashion icons continued to woo the crowds, and the paparazzi, with their effortless style and pizzazz. I’ve picked my seven favourite looks from the 65th Emmy Awards to share with all of you. We’ve got a lovely mix of very wearable hairstyles that are perfect for all kinds of occasions, age groups and style preferences across the board. From simple waves to flirty ponytails, here’s what the Red Carpet had to offer this time round.

Alyson Hannigan

Alyson Hannigan has got to be one of the most lovable stars of our time. Have you ever watched this woman’s interviews or seen her interacting with her kids in paparazzi shots? She’s adorable! What makes Alyson so charming, apart from her goofiness and great sense of humour is that she seems so normal and fun and relaxed. And she looks great while looking completely unfussy!

Her hairdo at the Emmy’s was a Red Carpet favourite: hair pulled over to one side over the shoulder, accentuated with deep waves. A classic vintage hairdo, this one’s symbolic of old world glamour and effortless style. And it’s oh-so-easy.

Wash your hair, allow it to dry naturally or blow dry it if your hair is naturally wavy. Add a few drops of shine serum for some gloss and then part your hair on the side and brush it over to the other side. Add waves to your hair using curling tongs or wave-makers/ deep-wave crimpers. Set the hair with some hairspray. It’s an easy style to wear because you don’t have to worry about your hair staying up or bobby pins sticking out.

Ariel Winter

Can you believe how elegant and pretty this young actress looks? The nerdy Alex from Modern Family was a vision in pink at the Emmy Awards. I’m loving how her hairstyle is the perfect mix of youthfulness and classiness. We see so many younger actresses and models trying too hard and experimenting with strictly adult-styles and the end result is usually a little overdone. Ms. Winter’s style hits just the right note and we can easily picture how it’d look great on women of all ages!

A side-swept fringe, a little bit of volume at the crown and a messy side bun- that’s all you need to achieve this fabulous look. It’s pretty and it’s elegant and I think it’d look great for prom or as a bridesmaid’s hairstyle.

Christina Hendricks

Christina Hendricks is a striking woman. It’s no secret that this breathtakingly beautiful actress is the presses’ darling and the cameras love her. I mean, just look at her! The picture of grace, glamour and some serious individualism. Christina’s known for her vintage-inspired sense of fashion and has become quite a style icon thanks to her memorable performances as the feisty Joan Harris in Mad Men.

At the Emmy Awards Christina was absolutely stunning black gown and her signature flame-coloured locks. Cut into a shoulder-length bob, her hair was styled into a short, curly, retro bob. This is a great look for when you want to dress up short or medium-length hair for an occasion and you’re bored of simply wearing it straight and loose.

You can use curling tongs on freshly washed and dried hair. For longer lasting curls you can use foam rollers overnight. You’ll get very tight curls that way and you can then loosen them up as per your preference. If you’d like some volume and you’d like your hair to spread out a bit like Christina’s you can also back comb the curls a bit or take small sections of hair, hold a strand straight and push the rest of the hair up against the central strand. This is a great way to add grain and volume to curls without losing their shape.

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough’s messy, piecy chin-length bob was one of the funkiest looks on the Red Carpet. Throughout this year’s major awards seasons Ms. Hough has continued to sport some seriously sassy yet glamorous hairdos on the various Red Carpets. All you have to do is wash your hair, allow it to dry it naturally or finger-dry it a bit and rub some texturising mouse into your hair to create a slight graininess. As long as your hair’s cut into a chin-length or shoulder-length bob this is a relatively easy hairstyle to pull off.

Michelle Dockery

Michelle Dockery is one of the most elegant, poised actresses on primetime TV at present. And you know an actress is phenomenal when you have a hard time separating her from her on-screen character. Michelle Dockery will always be Lady Mary to us Downton Abbey fans!

Michelle’s hairdo at the Emmy Awards 2013 is a great idea if you want to go short this winter. It’s a lovely, breezy style and short hair has been all the rage all year round, so it’s very trendy. With a deep side-part and tucked-in ends this fresh bob is a very youthful style.  And since it’s not your typical Red Carpet-updo it makes for a very refreshing statement indeed.

If this is the first time that you’re going short make sure you only work with a reputed hairdresser. Short haircuts can be tricky and it takes an experienced professional to get it just right. So, splurge a little on yourself and treat yourself to an exclusive salon and stylist!

Sarah Hyland

Here’s another Modern Family sweetheart wooing the cameras at the Emmy Awards. My, how those girls are growing up! Sarah Hyland’s rocking the brown hair trend like a pro, and the mix of creamy caramel and chocolate brown is doing wonders for her beautifully bronzed skin and jade-coloured gown. Sarah’s hairstyle is simple, pretty and so easy, a smooth, glossy ponytail tied low at the nape of the neck.

Wash your hair and make sure you use a high quality conditioner for some added shine and smoothness. This look is all about the sleek ponytail, so for some of you that will involve blow-drying your hair to make it smooth or using a straightening iron if your hair is very curly. I’d recommend the former over the latter if you’ve got slightly limp hair and you don’t want to flatten it out by straightening it. Next, brush your hair a couple of times to make sure it is very smooth and there are no knots and tangles in it. Separate your hair with a side part at the front and gather it at the nape of your neck at the back. Leave out a small section of hair and secure the rest into a low ponytail using a transparent hair-band. Take the extra section and wrap it around the base of your ponytail for some added flair. Tuck the ends into the original hair-band.

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel is, without a doubt, one of the most dazzling actresses around. It’s kind of hard to believe that a person could be that angelic looking off-screen, but Ms. Deschanel proves time and again that she’s television’s sweetheart for a reason!

A very important style lesson I’d like my readers to learn from the gorgeous Zooey, when you know a particular look works for you, milk it for all it’s worth! Create a signature style statement and flaunt it often. Whenever you want to mix things up a bit, add a few adjustments here and there and voila: you’re familiar but interesting! Zooey Deschanel’s known for her thick front fringe that really helps emphasize her gorgeous peepers but this time she’s also added a few big curls to open hair for a slightly different look. It’s the Zooey we all know and love, but with a twist!
