The Top Ten Hair Looks From Cannes 2014

Cannes. The very word is enough to send shivers down your spine if like most of us here you’re living, breathing and dreaming fashion and beauty. One of the most prestigious, sophisticated and exciting events of the international film community, the Festival de Cannes is possibly the one time of the year that can compare to the Academy Awards in terms of all the buzz and glamour and grandeur.

If you’ve been following the Cannes 2014 coverage you’ll have already feasted your eyes on some of the most striking outfits, jewellery and styling of the year. This past week we’ve seen some of the biggest celebrities of the world walk the red carpet in some of the most beautiful ensembles ever. I’ve picked my ten favourite looks from the festival to share with all of you. Enjoy!

Aishwarya Rai#AishwaryaRai #Cannes #2014

Aishwarya Rai is a Bollywood actress and the winner of the 1994 Miss World pageant. Often referred to as the “most beautiful woman in the world”, Aishwarya Rai has been gracing the Cannes red carpet for several years now. While her shimmering gold Roberto Cavalli fishtail gown has been winning both brickbats and bouquets from the international fashion community, there’s no contesting that the stunning actress wooed everyone with her silky, chestnut locks. The loose, flipped-out curls made for an extremely pretty style and the best part is you can easily achieve the look at home with a blow dryer and a large round bristle brush.

Blake Lively#BlakeLively #Cannes #2014

Blake Lively has been setting the Cannes red carpet on fire with her unbeatable sense of fashion and beauty. We’ve seen some really fantastic looks this past week but if the international response is anything to judge by, Blake Lively is the most talked-about fashion diva at this festival. This braided look is a fantastic take on the regular braid- a sleek crown is complimented by a sassy braid. Make sure you start the braid high on the crown for a more dramatic effect. You can opt for any of the usual braiding styles- just make sure you tug the braided loops a bit to add more volume and drama to the look.  The entire charm of the braid is in the unevenly sized loops and the purposeful messiness of it all. It’s a great way to balance an edgy-yet-formal look.

Blake Lively 2#BlakeLively2 #Cannes #2014

While the first Blake Lively look was edgy, funky and young this second look is glamorous, sophisticated and timeless. The very sleek, very voluminous rolled bun is probably the most talked-about hairstyle we’ve seen at Cannes 2014. One look at the rolled updo and it becomes evident why the entire world and their beauty-loving aunts are losing their minds over Blake’s hairdo. There’s something about the massive bun that is reminiscent of old-world, vintage glamour and retro styling but with a timeless appeal to it. I think it would make for an excellent bridal hairdo if you want to try something new but keep it classic still. Take a leaf out of Blair’s choices and accessorize the look with some simple, yet stunning jewels and the perfect red lip.

Cate Blanchett#CateBlanchett #Cannes #2014

Cate Blanchett is one of the most beautiful and elegant women in the world and we are all used to seeing her blend classic fashion with her own unique sense of style. This time was no different, and I’m rather a fan of her hair look this time. A quirky braided accent on the side was used to play up the classic bun. All you need to do is braid one side of your head into a French or Dutch braid till the back, close it off with a transparent elastic band and temporarily pin it in place with a bobby pin. Pull the rest of your hair back to secure it into a chignon. At this point, remove the pin and tuck the rest of the braid in with the bun so that the ends are incorporated into the volume of the bun.

Freida Pinto#FreidaPinto #Cannes #2014

Frieda Pinto’s gorgeous coral-pink Oscar de la Renta gown has been talked, tweeted and blogged about more than any other dress at Cannes 2014. The striking pink colour, the stunning gold lame detailing and the rather interesting contrast between a sweetheart neckline and a structured bodice have guaranteed that this is one style statement people will be discussing for quite some time to come.

What’s equally important is the styling lesson that we must take away from Freida’s look. When you’ve got a dress that is this arresting and breathtaking, the only way to properly do your hair is to keep it as simple and fuss-free as possible. Frieda’s hair was straightened and styled with a deep side part into a low ponytail. The hairdo is very simple, very classic and absolutely perfect for when you want to let the rest of your look do all the talking. Wrap a section of hair around the base of the ponytail to hide the elastic and tuck it into the elastic to polish the look up a bit. Who says ponytails can’t be glamorous?

Jessica Chastain#JessicaChastain #Cannes #2014

Jessica Chastain wooed everyone on the Cannes red carpet with her gorgeous deep lavender gown. It’s interesting how russet-coloured locks always look the best with green or purple tones. Jessica’s hair was styled into loose, piecy waves. The style is very fresh, flirty and feminine. It’s also incredibly easy because all you need is a curling iron and you’re good to go. You can keep the curls tight or break them up into looser waves for a summery, beachy vibe. The hairstyle was absolutely perfect with the flowing, almost Grecian structure of the gown.

Marion Cotillard#MarionCotillard #Cannes #2014

The French actress looked absolutely lovely in the pleated-and-gathered Dior dress, with the pale colour highlighting her delicate features. Marion’s hairstyle from this particular appearance is one of my favourites from the entire week because it’s a mixture of so many fun elements but they are all balanced out really well. The 60s beehive at the crown makes its way into a simple side ponytail at the end. To add a more delicate touch to the look, consider using a section of your hair to frame the beehive, pulling it across like a hair band from one side to the other.

Nicole Kidman#NicoleKidman #Cannes #2014

Opening Ceremony & "Grace Of Monaco" Premiere - The 67th Annual Cannes Film FestivalThe lovely Australian beauty is always a delight on the red carpet. This look of Nicole’s is basically a messy braid pulled over the front on one side, but what makes it interesting is the detailing at the back. Hair from one side has been twisted and looped into a braided border across the back and then pulled over the front on the other side. The best thing about hairstyles like these is that you don’t have to aim for perfection- messy strands and loose bits just add to the relaxed vibe that this look is all about.

Rooney Mara#RooneyMara #Cannes #2014

Rooney Mara is a very interesting young woman and her style choices usually reflect her unique personality. The angular, one-sided bob is a very edgy style but you can still keep the overall look delicate by playing up your natural features and keeping most of your makeup simple. You don’t have to go in for a permanent angular bob for this look- you can actually slick your hair back on one side and pull all of it over and across the front on the other side. Layering the hair this way makes it look almost buzzed or razed on one end while it is long on the other. What we have here is a faux half-bob and I think it is a genius way to play around with fashion without making a more serious commitment to the look.

Sofia Coppola#SofiaCoppola

Sofia Coppola’s curly short bob is all about being comfortable in your own skin. The hairstyle is both youthful and classic and is the kind of haircut that would look great at any occasion. The best part about this haircut is that once you actually get your hair cut in this fashion you don’t have to spend a lot of time styling it. You can generally allow it to dry naturally if you’ve got wavy hair or you can using curling tongs to add some more dimension to otherwise-straight locks. A soft side part will help frame the face and add more femininity to the style.

Hope all of you’ve enjoyed the looks from Cannes as much as I did. There’s enough inspiration here to keep you looking your most beautiful self at all the events you attend this year. Sound off in the comments below and let me know which ones you liked!
