The mood at the 2018 SAG Awards was noticeably different from the 2018 Golden Globes in terms of styling choices for the night. A lot of the female celebrities embraced more color and went with brighter makeup choices, while still keeping the focus firmly trained on the women’s rights #TimesUp movement. Hairstyles at the 2018 SAG Awards veered more towards the classic, traditional choices with tons of actresses such as Reese Witherspoon and Tracee Ellis Ross going with their signature looks. We did have some standout style statements and these are some of my picks for the best hairstyles from the 2018 SAG Awards.
Allison Williams is currently one of the most-discussed celebrities in the blogosphere after her appearance at the 2018 SAG Awards. Reactions to Williams’ look last night are divided, but I’m here for it. It’s a marriage between some extremely strong style statements that you’d never expect to see together – wet-look hair texture, 1920s-inspired flapper waves and vintage hairstyle vibes, blood-red lip color – and yet, these trends come together to make for one of the best hair and beauty looks from the 2018 SAG Awards: one that walked a strange and exciting line between Old Hollywood elegance and gothic glam.
It’s been a while since we saw anyone get creative with ponytails on the red carpet, so Halle Berry’s 2018 SAG Awards hairstyle was a welcome lesson in just how fun, funky and formal ponytails can be! The two-part ponytail –with one section at the crown and another beginning at the back-center – looks like your go-to high ponytail from the front, until you get a peek at the sides and the back. Just use the bubble ponytail method to recreate the look. Kick it up a notch by embracing those baby hairs, natural texture and carefully placed streaks of subtle hair color.
The Handmaid’s Tale star Madeline Brewer’s fiery ginger locks are enough of a hair statement in themselves, but it’s her hair accessory that really has me singing. Madeline’s slicked-crown and brushed-back loose down-do is played up with some beautiful pearl-topped hairpins. The hair embellishment route is a smart way to make a style statement without going OTT with your hairstyles and the pearl pins matched Madeline’s pearl-studded dress beautifully. As is so often the case, these babies come from one my all-time favorite hair accessories designer, Jennifer Behr.
Margot Robbie continues to make the best style statements on the 2018 Red Carpet with a multi-tonal, buttery blonde lob that manages to be both beachy and glam all the time. The easy center part, soft bedhead waves and natural flyaways make the lob just the sort of 2018 hair and beauty trend that real women everywhere will love. At the same time, the deeper color at the roots and several beautifully blended shades of blonde make it all look more polished and sophisticated.
Romantic buns and wispy hairdos have become Nicole Kidman’s go-to red carpet choices and with good reason: she looks breathtaking time after time. The looped side bun, the soft tendrils loose on the other side and the gentle hair waves all make for a look that is arresting in its own right but doesn’t clash with other very strong aspects of Nicole’s look: the rainbow-sequin-encrusted gown with the shoulder accent, the statement lip and the dazzling earrings.
The last few seasons have thrown up some young stars with some fabulous style and Black-ish’s Yara Shahidi is definitely one of them. Those Diana Ross-inspired curls were definitely one of the 2018 SAG Awards’ best hairstyles. The key to working natural texture and dark hair is in amping up the texture: glossy, bouncy, voluminous curls are a major style statement. Wearing your hair big and curly involves using the right products to maintain volume and vibrancy without weighing it down. Yara’s simple makeup, accessories and classic black outfit all work wonderfully with the bold hair.
