I had the pleasure of working with the lovely Taylor Schilling for the 2018 SAG Awards. The Orange Is The New Black star made one of the strongest style statements of the night with her 1980s-inspired makeup. Since Taylor was channeling some major David Bowie vibes with the electric smoky eyes, I wanted her hair to compliment the mood without going too big with it. I balanced the bouffant-like volume at the front with a tucked-in twist at the back. The whole look was very rock-and-roll, with a feline sexiness and some gritty drama so we went with a swept-back but not slicked-down texture.
To create the volume at the front, I backcombed sections of the crown, before gently brushing it all back and gathering the hair into a low ponytail at the nape. Then, I twisted the ponytail in on itself, forming a soft updo by tucking the ends into the twist. Getting the texture right is integral to making voluminous updos work, which is why having the right products on hand is absolutely necessary. The slightly messy texture, volume and flyaways all played beautifully with Taylor’s edgy makeup and accessories.
Using a mixture of light and dark hair colors together is a great way to create light, body and movement in all kinds of hairstyles, and as you can see from Taylor Schilling’s 2018 SAG Awards look, it really adds that extra oomph to brushed back hairstyles.
