Another awards show, another pinterest-worthy board of hairstyles and hair trends to inspire us all. Here are some of the best hairstyles from the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards.
Allison Janney’s big, bouncy waves and soft, feathered side-swept bangs are the stuff the 80s are famous for. Everything from her coppery-rose-gold-brunette hair color to the bombshell waves screams perfection. Allison’s hair is a sharp departure from the super-structured, perfectly carved and finished haircuts and hairstyles that have dominated runways and red carpets over the past few seasons. There’s something so lively, spirited and sexy about the Farah Fawcett-style waves that it’s no wonder Janney’s topped most best-styled lists this past week.
Jamie Alexander’s faux-hawk style updo from the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards is possibly the night’s most striking hairstyle. If you’re looking for versatile hairstyles that work in all kinds of lengths, this is a good one to play around with. Longer lengths can be styled into an updo or a braid pinned up at the back while shorter lengths can be pinned/ gelled down into place. The massive volume and cresting-wave like effect makes for a bold look. There’s something incredibly modern and yet retro, pompadour-esque about the look that I really love.
Margot Robbie’s going 2 for 2 in the 2018 awards season with some fabulous hairstyles. For the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards, Margot’s stylist finished off the evergreen topknot with a black velvet ribbon. Hair accessories are making a big comeback this season and Margot’s ribbon was a nod to the detailing on her Chanel dress. Letting the ends hang loose compliments the slightly messy texture of the hairdo itself and manages to create a look that is both classic and fresh.
Natalia Dyer’s shoulder-length wavy hairstyle made a real splash in the online fashion and beauty community; the Stranger Things’ star is being lauded for rebranding the classic Old Hollywood waves into a sexier, edgier 2018 version. How, you ask? The secret is in the texture. We’ve got a slightly grainer, piece-y finish that keeps the style from looking too put-together. Also, the dark-roots-light-lengths hair trend adds more drama to the hairstyle.
Another updated example of the classic waves was seen on Olivia Munn at the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards. The retro waves/ Old Hollywood hairstyle is typically defined by large, loose waves side-parted hair and Olivia’s stylist kept the essence of the iconic style intact but with a few tiny tweaks that made a big difference. For starters, the side part was moved higher up on the head, only just slightly off-center whereas in the original hairstyle, the hair is parted strongly to a side. You’ll also notice that the parting itself isn’t as painstakingly neat as in the old days. Another change: the waves are even looser and larger than usual, giving an effortless, casual chic vibe to a very glam hairdo. Women today, of course, play around with hair color combinations and gradients a lot more, so ombres and soft highlights are another way to spice up classic hairstyles.
Which one of these hairstyles was your favorite from the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards? What other looks do you plan to try out? If you’re looking for more inspiration, Alison Brie’s romantic half-up-half-down hairstyle and Skyler Samuels’ hair accessories were some of my other favorites from the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards.
