Ruth Wilson looked sensational at the Met Ball

New York City’s Met Ball has been called “the Oscars of the fashion world,” and with good reason. The legendary American designer Charles James was honoured at the Met Gala’s 2014 with the theme White Tie & Decorations.

It was one of the most formal & stylish evenings I have seen in a long time. Due to the high octane fashion nature of the ball, the beautiful stars attending wore elegant, one-of-a-kind dresses naturally, I was there getting Ruth Wilson ready for her appearance at the event.

Ruth just looked sensational, sailing up the legendary red Met staircase wearing a stunning gown by Erdem.

I wanted to create a modern version of a hairstyle that is elegant, polished & iconic such as the classic Chignon and my inspiration was a cross between Downton Abbey and Haute Couture.

Apply some Wella Professional Perfect setting blow dry lotion as it emphasises the hold & shine.

Blow-dry the hairline around your forehead and lower neck in a backwards and upwards direction, towards the center of your head.

Once the hair is completely dry straighten the mid length & ends with a straightener such as the Braun SensoCare Styler to ensure your chignon bun will have a uber-sleek and shiny quality

Create a low side parting to your preferred side, for a touch of retro glamour.

Use a brush to gather all hair into a low sitting ponytail the nape of your neck and secure into a ponytail using a bungee elastic. I really like the Braun Satin-Hair Brush for this as smoothens down cuticles, tames  frizz and fly-aways.

Coil the ponytail around itself into a figure of eight and secure the ends with some grips.

Finish by adding more shine with a glossy serum such as the Wella Professional Oil Reflections and some Wella Hairspray for hold.

Pastel & Rainbow Hair Color Trend

Unless you’ve been living under a rock- a dull, grey rock at that- these past few months, there is absolutely no way you wouldn’t have noticed the rainbow hair colour trend that’s been taking the world by storm. And it’s not even a very new trend- we’ve been seen celebrities experiment with pastel colours and venturing into daring, jewel tones for the better part of the last six months. And I, for one, have been loving every minute of it! While most of my clients prefer to go darker during the winter months, summer is the time to lighten up and experiment with flirty, frisky trends. If you’re looking to switch things up for the coming months, take a cue out of the following fashionistas’ style diaries. Alexa Chung

Alexa Chung’s milkmaid braids here are adorable, but it’s really the rainbow accents that steal the show. I love how the colouring is subtle and pretty and how well it merges into her base hair colour. At first glance, it really does look like rainbow reflections in a clear puddle. Another great thing about this particular take on the rainbow trend is that it clearly shows you can have fun with colours in dark hair too.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato’s made quite a splash in the fashion world with her ever-changing hair colour. Not one to shy away from striking statements and bold style choices, Demi’s locks have been pioneering one hair trend after another. The great thing about her blue do here is that it isn’t a single, flat shade. While blue can be quite a lovely colour all by itself, Demi’s adding some major pizzazz to the look by blending a number of different hues. From a deep teal to a more purplish indigo, this one’s going to leave you feeling anything but blue!

Demi Lovato

If the blue wasn’t really to your liking, Demi shows off a girlier, flirtier side here with a stunning deep berry-pink hue. Pink’s been one of the most popular colour choices over the past year and Demi’s one of many celebs to opt for this darling colour. However, where most people have chosen to go pastel with soft, baby pink hair Demi’s rocking a rather spirited hue. It rather reminds of a full-bodied rosé wine- decadent and divine.

Ireland Baldwin

Purple’s been another celebrity favourite and Ireland Baldwin’s lovely lavender locks offset her lighter tips wonderfully. Now, purple’s typically not a hair colour most people can carry off and these pastel shades are better suited to fair-skinned people. If you’re a more olive or honey tone and you want to play around with this majestic colour, I’d recommend going in for deeper, darker shades of purple.

Katy Perry

Think coloured hair; think Katy Perry. The songstress is no stranger to experimenting with her look and we’ve seen her in all kinds of hair colours, ranging from a bubblegum pink to this fusion of shimmery, mermaid hues. From a dazzling sapphire to a rich violet, Katy’s take on the rainbow trend is nothing short of mesmerising.

Ke$ha

Combining two of the year’s hottest colour trends- pastels and rainbow hues- Ke$ha shows us that outré looks can also be feminine and flirty. Needless to say, this isn’t really a long-term style and you’re probably going to tire of it within a couple of months but with summer around the corner, it’s time to live a little! If you’ve got light hair you can always start out small and bring back last year’s chalking trend. If you’re feeling frisky and you can’t pick any one pastel/ rainbow-inspired hue make like Ke$ha and try them all.

Nicole Richie

The lavender-lilac tones have been extremely popular with celebrities. You probably remember Kelly Osbourne’s wooing the world with her daring purple locks- a change that worked wonders both for her look and her public persona. Sometimes taking a risk is really all you need to do in order to shed your old self and embrace the person you’re meant to be. Nicole Richie’s all-over purple colour is refreshing and exciting and she’s a great example of going crazy with colour while also looking graceful and elegant. Who would’ve thought a sleek bun could look so good in purple hair!

Breaking Free in Berlin with Jessica Alba

I’m thrilled to be here in Berlin styling Jessica Alba to unveil Braun’s exciting new Break Free campaign.  After a hectic few weeks of Fashion Week shows in Paris, Milan and London, plus some big-name award shows including the Oscars, I’ll be drawing inspiration from the newest of the new and the best of 2014, playing around with some of the fun and funky styles I’ve loved over the last few months. With her hair up or down, structured and formal or swingy and fun, Jessica’s own style brilliantly shows off the theme of Braun’s campaign – encouraging women to “Break Free” from the fear of judgment and self-doubt by sharing positive messages of support with one another.

I’ll be hosting media events with reps from fashion and hair publications around the world, sharing hair care and styling advice that they can take back to their readers.  Stay tuned to your favourite style mag so you can see the looks and read the tips, no matter where in the world you may be!

Paris Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2014

Here’s the piece you’ve all been waiting for: the Paris 2014 Fall Fashion Week. We saw a whole bunch of very interesting, and some very unusual, hairstyles at the Paris shows. Given that the Paris Fashion Week A/W 2014 began right after the Oscars, we saw a bunch of celebrities heading over the very next day to attend the last leg of this year’s Fall shows. Here’s my list of the best looks from the Paris Fall 2014 Fashion Week. While some of the styles are great for everyday wear, others are better suited for when you want to make a splash! Take your pick: Alexander McQueen

The models at the Alexander McQueen show wore their hair in circular cornrows all around the head, with the first braid on either side hanging loose and straight beneath the ears. Now, I understand that this clearly isn’t an everyday look, and it might be a little difficult to work even on the best of days, but I couldn’t help but admire the style. The thing with the Fashion Weeks is that after a while, you start to see patterns and trends repeating, and while that might act as a great forecast for the coming year, it’s just so exciting to see something different on the runway. I’m loving this “beehive braid” effect simply because it’s unusual, it’s bold and it’s braided! What’s not to love? If you ever feel like doing something jaw-droppingly different with your look, take a cue out of the Alexander McQueen Fall 2014 show!

Alexis Mabille

The gently curling, loose waves at the Alexis Mabille show were nothing new but it’s a classic look for all ages and features and one that I can’t recommend enough. There’s nothing as attractive as sleek, shiny, healthy hair that’s been styled simply. The best part about the look is that it’s more about playing up your natural hairdo than actually styling your hair to look different. If you’ve got naturally wavy hair all you need to do is make sure it’s healthy and that you use quality hair products. If you’ve got pin-straight hair, you might have to use a curling wand or even large foam rollers to add a few waves to your hair. A straight middle part is equal parts subtle and striking and makes for a great everyday look.

Elie Saab

The hairstyle at the Elie Saab show was a straightened version of the previous look: shiny, sleek hair parted down the middle and allowed to fall as naturally as possible. The best part about hairstyles like this is that they are not only effortless (for the most part) but they also help to play up your natural features. With such hairstyles, your facial features and any makeup, jewellery, fashion trend you might be sporting is the centre of the look and not the hairstyle itself. So, if you’re looking for a subtle hairdo that allows you to emphasise other parts of your look, this might be just the thing for you.

Givenchy

The models at the Givenchy Paris Fall 2014 show wore their hair parted slightly off the middle and styled into small, tight braids at the back. The good old plait can be quite attractive if it’s done right. My tip for this classic style? Make sure you use a transparent elastic to fasten the plait: the plain black or coloured ties end up distracting from the clean, natural lines of the style.

Iris Van Herpen

The hairstyles at the Iris Van Herpen are definitely not an everyday look. With pulled back and twisted rolls, layered sections and looped braids at the back, this is a daring and edgy look best reserved for a themed event or a day when you want a look that’s slightly tougher than your everyday hairstyle. I’ve included it here in this list because it was really striking, and looked rather interesting especially at the front, with the twists creating slight cat ear-like raises going all the way back.

Issey Miyake

At first, when you take a look at the models from the Issey Miyake Fall 2014 Fashion Week, you’re going to be struck by the slick, separated sculpting of the hair at the front. There are many ways of achieving this style, right from using a styling gel and creating tiny “walls” or rows of hair using the tailend of a rattail comb to the much easier option of just pulling on a metal hairband with grooves to give you that cornrow effect. However, whether or not you want to style your crown this way is up to you, because the actual appeal of the hairstyle is in the bun at the back!

The thick, coiled and roped buns are absolutely gorgeous. Just take a look at the photo of the style from the back and tell me if it isn’t to die for! And the best part is, it’s quite easy to pull off, provided your hair is clean and brushed free of any tangles. You only need to gather all your hair at the nape of your neck and start twisting it in on yourself to give it the rope-like look. Then start placing the hair on your head in coils, twisting as you go along in an outer-to-inner circular motion. Keep adding bobby pins to make sure that the coils stay in place and add some hairspray once you’re done.

John Galliano

John Galliano’s models wore their hair straight, loose and down the back. The fairly simple look was dressed up by parting the hair to one side, pulling it low over the forehead and tucking it in behind one ear. It’s an easy look and it’s especially great for those of you with fine hair that won’t get frizzy or voluminous through the course of the day.

I hope all my readers have enjoyed the Fashion Weeks every bit as much as I have. I’ll be back soon with more great pieces on hair styling and care. See you soon!

Milan Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2014

Milan is undoubtedly one of the sexiest, most sophisticated cities in the world and the Milan Autumn Winter 2014 Fashion Week has most certainly lived up to all my expectations. I’ve picked out five of my favourite hairstyles from the Milan Fall 2014 Fashion Week and I’m looking forward to hearing your views on the same. Enjoy! 1. Fendi

The hair at the Fendi Autumn/ Winter 2014 Fashion Week was hands down the clear winner for me here. Normally when I’m combing through (pun totally intended!) the Fashion Weeks, I like to browse through the best looks and emerging trends and I’m not really looking to pick an absolute favourite. However, the gorgeous, overlapped, multilayered ponytail at the Fendi Milan 2014 Fashion Week is one of the coolest things I’ve seen on the runways in recent times.

This is a very sharp, modern hairstyle and the key is to play up the severe lines of the style. You’re essentially arranging the hair on the crown in a basket-weave pattern before pulling it into a low ponytail at the back.

Work with freshly washed, blow-dried and then straightened hair. Remember to make sure your hair is completely dry before you use a straightening iron on it. Once your hair is smooth, comb it through properly and then create two deep side parts on either side at the front. Take these sections of hair to the back and then fold them over one another to create the overlapped effect you see in the pictures. Then pull the hair back to the nape of your neck and use a hair elastic to secure it in place. Fashion maestro Karl Lagerfeld’s inspiration behind this look is a very minimalistic, sharp play on linear structures so make sure your hair is as smooth and as slick as it can be. Spray on some holding spray (preferably one with shine-boosting properties) and you’re good to go.

2. Giorgio Armani

The look from the Giorgio Armani show is a great style not only because waves are a great choice for spring-summer, but also because it’s so easy to pull this style off at home. The beachy, boho waves have been really popular over the last few summers and this slightly deeper, more crimped take on the trend is every bit as interesting.

The best part is that there are a bunch of different ways in which you could get your hair to look like this. You could braid damp hair and leave the braids in overnight and undo them the next day and just run your fingers through the waves to loosen them up a bit. You could use perm rods for tighter, more pronounced twists if you like. If you’re short on time you could use one of the “wave maker” or “crimper” styling tools. And then, of course, there’s always the trusty curling iron to fall back on.

For a more natural look, I suggest curling the hair about an inch from the roots. This way you won’t have to worry about any stress to the roots and the style will look less “styled”.

3. Gucci

Gucci’s straight, sleek hair isn’t something you probably haven’t tried a million times on your own, but I do love the way they’ve parted the models’ hair. A deep side part with the hair pulled low over the forehead to the other side and tucked behind the ear has such an elegant, softly feminine appeal. To get the same kind of dimension to the look, pick a small strand of hair to tuck behind the ear while letting the rest of the pulled-to-the-side hair hang out from underneath the tucked part. This will add the tiniest bit of drama to the look and will frame your face beautifully.

It’s really quite something to notice how even the tiniest adjustments and tricks can make a fairly straightforward style look so pretty.

4. MaxMara

The short pixie cuts at the MaxMara Milan Autumn Winter 2014 Fashion Week were absolutely gorgeous. The deep berry lip colour and matching nail paint really helped add a strong, sensual touch to an otherwise edgy haircut. My favourite thing about this look is how the hair at the front is kept noticeably longer than the rest to make for very sexy, forehead sweeping bangs. The look is equal parts edgy and elfin and I definitely think the stylists at the MaxMara show got this one down pat.

5. Missoni

Missoni’s high, messy buns with the loose strands and small, forehead framing bangs are such a great, everyday look. Anyone with shoulder-length (and longer) hair can pull this off with ease. The look will obviously work better in straight hair if you want to leave some sections hanging loose but the best part about the style is that even if your natural hair is wavy or unruly, a high bun is the easiest way to be stylish and fuss-free. The short, angular bangs add a touch of girlishness to the style.

Hope you’ve all enjoyed my take on the Milan Fashion Week for Autumn Winter 2014. The Paris Fashion Week is shaping up to be great fun and I can’t wait to share my picks with all of you.

Hair Pride Shines For Bloggers In Dubai

Hair Pride shines for bloggers in Dubai

I’m excited to be back in sunny Dubai, but even more excited about what I’m doing here.  What am I up to this time?  My favourite things:  teaching, demonstrating, giving away the secrets!

This week, I’ll be hosting three top fashion experts, beauty & hair bloggers from Dubai, Karachi and Jeddah, taking each of these ladies on a “hair journey” to show them how to achieve the hottest red-carpet looks with the glossy, luxurious hair that Middle Eastern women are so thrilled to show off as part of Braun’s Hair Pride Movement.

We’re also putting together a trend presentation with some stunning models, showing off the latest celebrity & catwalk trends for 2014.

I’m sure these great bloggers, Diala Makki, Nilo Haq and Alaa Hashim Balkhy, will have just as much to teach me as I’m bringing to share with them.  I’m looking forward to using Braun’s hair-safe tools and letting myself get carried away by the best of Middle Eastern culture along with the latest styles from the red carpet season and the global hair trends from the Fashion weeks that only finished 3 days ago, to build international collaboration of the very best kind.

Oscars 2014: Best Hair Looks

Hi everyone I received so many request to write more about  the 2014 Academy Awards, so here it is: :-)

Most of us in the fashion and beauty industry are guilty of being somewhat keener on the Red Carpet and all the glitz and glamour than the awards show itself. It’s that one night of the year when the stars come out in all their stunning glory and all the different clothes, accessories, hair and makeup looks and fashion statements make for a dazzling, head-spinning experience. The Oscars Red Carpet is like Mecca for us fashion lovers and I’m thrilled to share my favourite looks from the event with all of you.

1. Lupita Nyong’o

#LupitaNyong 86th Annual #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014
#LupitaNyong 86th Annual #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014

It comes as no surprise to anyone that Lupita Nyong’o was one of the best-dressed women at the function. The ethereal ice-blue gown from Prada is the sort of dress that little girls the world over dream of: a slender bodice with a twirly skirt. But it’s Ms. Nyongo’s unmistakable short crop that really sets her apart. We’ve been watching her top all the Best Dressed and Best Hair and Makeup lists all season and the 2014 Oscars are no different.

Lupita shows us all how even a conventionally severe buzz/ short crop can be heartbreakingly delicate and feminine. I’m sure most of us never expected to see a mini mowhawk look that pretty, and the 12 Years A Slave has truly earned her title as a style icon. If you’re worried about short hairdos looking too severe, dress them up with feminine accessories. Lupita’s headband here was designed by Fred Leighton and it’s an absolute vision in 18kt yellow gold and diamonds. That’s a pretty penny to spend on a hair accessory, but you can most definitely find a dupe that’s easier on the pocket. Go ahead and rock some shorthaired style this year.

2. Jennifer Lawrence

The young actress has been taking Hollywood by storm and if recent months are anything to reckon by, Jennifer Lawrence will continue to rule both the silver screen and the Red Carpets for quite some time to come. The gorgeous scarlet Dior dress was one of the brightest pops of colour at this year’s Oscars and I’m absolutely loving the way her short hair was styled to show off the dress and draw attention to the bejewelled back chain accent. Jennifer’s hairdo is defined by tonnes of lift and volume: the entire look is based on arranging the hair up and away from the front: bringing out her features, emphasizing the natural lines of her collar bones and shoulders and letting the gorgeous gown do all the fashionising. The hairdo’s a great balance between sass and style.

3. Emma Watson

#EmmaWatson #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014

Hermione from the Harry Potter franchise is all grown up and continues to be one of the most stylish and well put-together young actresses in the industry. Known to experiment with style, the Bling Ring actress wore her hair in a messy half-up/half-down style that was a perfect fit with her metallic dress and crimson lip. This hairdo’s all about the messy, tousled texture so be sure to use a texture spray before you tease your hair for volume. Twist and pull back strands away from the face and pin them into place using bobby pins. You can fold strands to add more dimensions to the look. For the messy-chic effect, let the ends hang loose. If you’re heading out for a formal do, add pretty hair accessories like Emma’s and you’re all set.

4. Naomi Watts

#NaomiWatts #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014
#NaomiWatts #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014

Naomi Watts is a veteran on most Oscar Best Dressed lists and she’s done it once again. While most fashion lovers like to see unusual colours/ shapes on the Red Carpet because the usual black and white (though elegant) are somewhat staple fare, Ms. Watts managed to stay classic yet stand out with her deep red lip, geometric neck piece and sleek hair. What I love about this particular hairstyle is that it is so easy to style (just about anyone can pull this off at home) and yet there’s just something about the look that’s bound to get you noticed. While it’s essentially nothing more than washed, blow-dried and straightened hair, there’s a subtle pull to the look. This one’s all about arranging your hair just right: brushing it back and away from the face, adding a tiny bit of volume right at the crown- so little that it’s but a natural lift- and pulling the hair over slightly to one side. Use a hairspray if you’re worried about losing the shape but really, this one is all about soft, sleek styling.

6. Kate Hudson

#KateHudson #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014
#KateHudson #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014

Kate Hudson’s shimmery, beaded pearl-coloured gown was undoubtedly one of the most interesting and exciting looks from the event. With the plunging neckline, the padded shoulders, the cape-like cowl accents and the figure-hugging bodice, the slinky Atelier Versace gown was a perfect fit for the strikingly beautiful actress. Her bouncy, retro side waves made for the perfect addition to the ultra glamorous look. When you’re opting for a classic style like this one, the key to making it look great is in ensuring that your hair looks as healthy, shiny and bouncy as possible. A good hair care regimen, the right styling products and quality tools can make even the simplest hairstyles look breathtakingly beautiful.

7. Penolope Cruz

#PenelopeCruz #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014
#PenelopeCruz #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014

Penelope Cruz’s blush pink gown with black empire-line accents is earning both brickbats and bouquets from the online community but as far as I’m concerned, it’s the actress’ great hairdo that I’m interested in. A sleek, big top knot never goes out of style and amidst all the loose waves and the edgy haircuts it was nice to see this Red Carpet favourite make an appearance. There’s something so unquestionably beautiful about a perfectly twisted large bun: it’s no wonder that the trend never goes out of style. It’s a great way to be comfortable, draw attention to your face and sport some stunning jewellery while being occasion-appropriate as well.

8. Charlize Theron

#CharlizeTheron #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014
#CharlizeTheron #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014

With her classic bob, thick black eyeliner and stunning jewellery, Charlize Theron was the perfected example of understated elegance at this year’s Oscars. Sometimes, the best way to style really short hair is to keep the look neat, smooth and minimalist. If you’re not keen on too much volume or a messy, piecy look all you need to do is blow-dry or straighten your washed hair, use some smoothening serum and brush your hair into place.

9. Viola Davis

#ViolaDavis #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014
#ViolaDavis #AcademyAwards - Arrivals #oscars2014

Viola Davis is one of the most beautiful women in the industry at present, and with her sea foam green Escada gown, smouldering smoky eye and perfect nude lip she was one of the most elegantly dressed people at the show. I’m absolutely in love with how she was wearing the classic Old Hollywood finger waves in her short hair: it’s a fun way to experiment with timeless and modern hair trends by mixing things up and it sure worked out well for Viola here.

10. Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie was one of the most discussed actresses at this year’s Oscars: the stunner debuted her newly brunette hair for the first time ever on a Red Carpet and left many people surprised with her deliciously dark locks. With her inky Saint Laurent gown and Old Hollywood waves, the actress from The Wolf of Wall Street might have something in common with Sandra Bullock’s look from the evening but I think she deserves her own spot on this list. The rich berry tones of her lipstick and the daring colour change have earned Robbie many a nod from the fashion and beauty community.

Elisabeth Moss: Making waves at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party

The Vanity Fair party is the top A-list Oscar-night party, and this year, Elisabeth Moss capped off a season of glitz and red carpets spotlights by stepping out in a deceptively simple cascade of glossy waves, proving once and for all that short brown hair doesn’t have to be mousey. After seeing Elisabeth’s gorgeous floor-length black dress, with its polka-dotted peek-a-boo bodice, I decided to keep her look sexy and sophisticated, yet youthful and lively: a projection of the kind of vivacious energy that’s become her trademark.

I opted for dressing her hair in sexy bouncy curls that flowed down past her shoulders. To play up the style, we added a low side parting and brushed one side behind the ear to enhance the cinematic feel of this look.

Vanity Fair has dominated the Oscar scene since the Mad Men era, but this year was its first in a parking lot on West Hollywood chosen to hold a bigger crowd than the usual 1000+ … of whom Elisabeth was among the most fabulous, bringing classy styles of the 1960s thoroughly up-to-date for 2014.  And the great news is – this is a very easy look that you can recreate at home without any fuss.

Sexy tumbling iconic waves – get the look

After washing and conditioning, gently towel-dry your hair and apply Wella Elastic Energy Mousse through the hair, using a wide toothed comb to give this look staying power.  Spread the product right through to the tips of the hair to boost the energy of your curls with irresistible definition and virtually frizz-free shine.

Blow-dry using a large round brush. Direct the nozzle upwards for added root-lift. Ensure the hairdryer isn’t too hot, which can cause it to dry out and break, giving you frizz.

Once the hair is completely dry, create a low side parting for added glam and section the hair into manageable pieces.

Use a medium size curling iron to create lush, tumbling waves.  Tong each section, working around the head, and turning the tongs one way and then the other to roll as you work round. It is important to set the temperature of your iron according to the needs of your hair to avoid heat damage. A great one is the Braun Satin hair curler.

Starting at the front and working backwards, wrap sections of hair around a medium-sized heated curling iron and secure each curled section with pins or clips. I would recommend that you use a curling iron that allows you to adjust the temperature to the needs of your hair. ( Love the one from the Braun satin hair range )

Spray the pinned hair lightly with Wella Stay Essential Hairspray and leave to cool.

When the hair is completely cool, release the curled sections, remove all the grips and smooth through with your hands to loosen the ringlets.

Using a large soft brush, gently brush through the curls to create smooth soft waves.

Don’t be tempted to over-brush or the hair will become frizzy and loose its smoothness. A few drops of Wella Oil Reflections will work wonders to add the right level of smoothness and glossy shine to your hair.

To finish use Wella Stay Essential Hairspray for added hold that’s lasting but flexible. It will keep your style with sophisticated sheen full of shine and bounce.

Short hair? – no problem!

If you have shorter hair, you can still get the look, thanks to today’s new clip-in extensions.  They’re a great way to get an instant long-haired look like this, as long as you follow my guidelines for safe extensions.

Karolina Kurkova At Elton John Oscar Viewing Party

Kurkova goes angelic at Elton John Oscar Vanity Fair viewing party

When it comes to model-actress Karolína Kurková, we expect the unexpected.  From rogue to vogue, she loves to surprise and looks terrific in any style.  For the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar viewing party, I got more than a coveted sneak peek – I got to help create the latest look for this natural blonde, a slightly loose take on the popular updo that seemed to lift her into the ethereal realm, thanks to her lacy, almost-translucent white lace gown by Elie Saab.

Karolína  was recently featured in Stylist Magazine’s Spring/Summer 2014 Fashion Special, appearing as “Every Woman,” in eight styles that ranged from punk to pin-up to showgirl, sporting spikes, glossy curls, wigs and a range of hot labels to match.  Needless to say, all eight looks were stunning, as was her angelic appearance at the Oscar viewing party.  Though between the blaze of bright orangey-red in Karolína’s lipstick and the sharp point of her Christian Louboutin shoes, maybe she’s not such an angel after all!

It’s always a delight to work with someone open-minded and versatile enough to continually inspire and delight her admirers and I can’t wait to see what look Karolína reveals to the world next.

Best Hair Oscar 2014

It would be a letdown if there wasn’t so much to rave about:  Oscar season has come and gone, but lucky for us, the looks remain.  I’ve been so inspired by the great hairstyles I’ve seen over the last few days!  Here’s a quick roundup of my Top 5 looks of Oscar season 2014.

Emma Watson.

Emma made her Oscar debut sporting the “rock n’ roll pony” – a gorgeously undone take on the slick looks she’s sported at previous events.  Her relaxed bun was deliberately bedheaded around the edges, leaving the British beauty, with her classic silvery gown and red lips, looking ever so poised and even a touch magical.

Sandra Bullock & Margot Robbie.

Both ladies shimmered in their classic Hollywood sexy loose brunette waves (the dark-brown hair was a shocking new twist for usually blonde Margot), cascading slinkily down over one shoulder.  They brought individuality to the look with starkly different makeup styles – Margot’s darkly dangerous, and Sandra’s understated and natural.

Julia Roberts.

In yet another colour turnaround, this red carpet veteran has gone the opposite direction from Margot – shifting from a dark shade to a light one with her new take on the faux bob.  Julia’s updo shows less structure than looks she’s worn in past, and a fun new shade which steers well clear of brassy to arrive at a sophisticated golden warmth.

Penelopez Cruz.

Proving that a big, high bun is perennially ballerina-beautiful, Penelope was nothing short of statuesque in a classic pale-pink gown elegantly draped to show off her perfectly-toned arms.  She didn’t need much makeup, either, to achieve a look that was both understated and classically elegant.

Cate Blanchett.

Winning Best Actress for her movie Blue Jasmine was probably the best way to top off Cate’s great hair day.  She knocked ‘em dead on the red carpet in a Swarovski-studded Armani Prive gown and romantic clavi-length swirls of blonde hair, in a golden shade that looked gorgeous reflected in the shine of her well-deserved Oscar.

It’s been tons of fun seeing these stars shifting away from the more rigid styles they’ve worn in the past.  This year’s Oscar celebrities got to show off their hair in all its glory – wavy, rumpled, sleek and, in the notable case of Liza Minelli, who joined in a Wizard of Oz tribute – streaked with blue.

However you look at it, whether you were on the front row, behind the scenes, or just watching at home, 2014 was an unforgettable hair year at the Academy Awards.

Michelle Dockery Attends The Premiere Her Of ‘Non-Stop’ Movie

Michelle Dockery joined Julianne MooreLupita Nyong'o & Liam Neeson on the red carpet for the LA premiere of ‘Non-Stop’ held at the Regency Village Theatre on Monday (February 24) in Westwood, California. The British beauty looked divine wearing a figure-flattering Christian Dior Spring 2014 shimmering lurex dress with colourful floral embroidery.

She kept the look ultra-modern – and tres lady-like – with a pair of black Louboutin pumps featuring a pink PVC asymmetrical insert, a silver Edie Parker clutch and Cartier jewels.

We decided to style her hair in a slightly more dischevelled way,  giving  her jaw length bob a messy wavy texture...

Best Hair Moments From The Bafta's 2014

I couldn’t wait to see what styles the stars would turn up in at this year’s 67th Annual BAFTA Awards, and like always, they didn’t disappoint.

Of course, the biggest hair sensation of the night was Oprah and her lionesque cascade of reddish curls.  Nominated for The Butler, she bounced to the stage to try on an English accent as she presented the evening’s top award for the believe-it-or-not-it’s-British Gravity.

Just about everybody who’s anybody turned up on the Royal Opera House red carpet looking fantastic, making it hard to narrow it down to just five.  But in the end, there were five who really stood out for me, embodying the lush, elegant spirit of the evening.

5.  Ruth Wilson

If there were an award for sheer glitz, British actress Ruth Wilson would take it for her sparkly silver Antonio Berardi tux.  When your outfit makes such a strong statement, you need bold hair, and Ruth didn’t disappoint, with her short auburn curls styled into a wild, wavy sideswept updo.

4.  Amy Adams

Amy’s sleek every-hair-in-place-low-side-parted style, crowned by a flat side bun, was complemented by a floor-length Victoria Beckham black gown in a look so understated and classic, it might have been easy to overlook her if the overall effect hadn’t been so stunning.

3.  Lea Seydoux

Flaming against a cool royal blue Miu Miu sequined scoop-neck sheer-skirted gown, Lea’s red hair was parted on the side and smoothed into elegant Gatsby-era finger waves.  Nominated for her film Blue is the Warmest Colour, Lea proved there’s nothing warmer than this spicy ginger shade.

2. Naomie Harris

On a night when almost everybody turned up in winter black, Bond girl Naomie made a bold springtime splash in a fuchsia Gucci gown and an elegant updo, a look Perez Hilton crowed lent her “full goddess status.”  With lipstick coordinated to match her leg-baring dress, this new, glamorous look is certainly a sign of great things ahead for Naomie.

1.  Angelina Jolie

With her cool minimal look alongside Brad Pitt in matchy-matchy black-and-white suits, Angelina’s hair was tousled and blown to perfection in a pretty look that departs from Angelina’s usual formal up- or back-swept, off the face red-carpet look.  Without being messy, the wide-open “undone” neckline of her pure white blouse, smoky eyes, and loose, casual hair presented a fresh side of this versatile actress.

SAG Awards 2014 Best Hair Styles

The SAG Awards were such a blast! This year’s awards season is shaping up to be so very exciting and between the Golden Globe Awards and the SAG Awards we’ve seen some fantastic style statements. I for one cannot wait to see what the stars will be sporting at this year’s Academy Awards. For those of you who weren’t able to catch the show, here’s my take on some of the best hairdos from the evening. It was really difficult narrowing my favourites down to a small list, and the variety-oh my! We saw all kinds of breathtakingly feminine updos, edgy punk-inspired styles and chic, short hairdos. 1. Elisabeth Röhm

Elisabeth Röhm’s stunning messy bun was one of the most talked-about hairdos from the event. The high, twisted chignon was complimented by messy, wavy tendrils pushed back and set in place with a little volume at the crown. To top off the look, add some bejewelled hair spinners for some added drama. This super feminine, romantic updo would be a great bridal look for Spring-Summer 2014.

2. Michelle Dockery

The English actress has been sporting a rather chic bob in recent times, and we’ve all grown rather fond of it on the Red Carpet. The Downton Abbey star changed things up at the SAG Awards by pulling her short bob into a teeny ponytail. With a lightly teased crown and side-swept layers to the front, the hairdo was equal parts stylish and effortless.

3. Amy Adams

Amy Adam’s retro hairdo and orange lipstick channelled a fabulous vintage vibe. The faux bob with big, Old Hollywood curls made for one of the most iconic looks of the event. A very glamorous hairdo- this one’s perfect for an evening when you’re looking to make a statement.

4. Hannah Simone

Hannah Simone’s voluminous updo was undoubtedly one of the prettiest looks from the awards show. From the messy, teased crown to the lovely face-framing bangs Simone’s look was delicate, glamorous and timeless.

5. Sofía Vergara

Sofía Vergara is a stunner! The gorgeous actress, best known for playing yummy-mummy Gloria on Modern Family, turned heads with her glossy curls on the Red Carpet. The large, perfectly set waves and the delicious caramel-and-chocolate hair colour prove that timeless trends will continue to rule the roost in 2014. Sofia Vergara shows us that when it comes to hair, you can never go wrong with the classics.

6. Kerry Washington

The glowing mother-to-be and Scandal star wore her hair pulled back up into a classic bouffant with a teased crown. A simple black satin-y hair band completed this very simple yet very delicate hairdo. This would be a great look for a daytime as well as evening event.

7. Emilia Clarke

Khaleesi Emilia Clarke wore her hair in a faux bob as well- but the petite actress added a punch to the look by going in for a more angular style. Side-swept over to one side and with a curl accent at the front, this is a very flirty, fresh look that’d be great on most face types.

Golden Globes 2014: Best Hairstyles

The 2014 Golden Globes were a fantastic experience. I’d been looking forward to the Red Carpet for weeks and am I glad to say that it did not disappoint! When it comes to Red Carpet hairdos we saw some really great looks this time round. We had stars sporting their signature hairdos and some pretty trademark trends that have been all the rage this past one year as well as some really fresh new looks that we weren’t quite expecting! All in all, it has been a fantastic Red Carpet and it sure spells great things for the year to come! Here’s my take on some of the best looks from the 2014 Golden Globes. Hope you guys enjoy them as much as I did.

1. Amber Heard

Amber Heard’s messy, voluminous, crazily teased-out high bun is one of the most talked about hairdos from the 2014 Golden Globes. The hairdo might take a little bit of practice before you can get it to look just right but with a little bit of patience and some trial-and-error, you should be able to achieve it in no time: all you need is a rattail comb for teasing your hair, a bunch of bobby pins and a stronghold spray. This look is all about the volume, from the pouf at the front to the artfully backcombed and pinned high bun. While most celebrities tend to make a fashion statement with the clothes they’re wearing or their makeup or their jewellery, this statement is really all about the hair.

Messy enough to look fresh and flirty, but classic enough to be the right fit at a formal event, this hairdo is definitely one of the best we’ve seen in recent times.

2. Lupita Nyong’o

This stunning actress has been killing it all of last year with one great Red Carpet look after another. Lupita’s fashion-forward choices have rightly earned her the top spot on many a Best Dressed list. It’s fairly safe to say that everyone, including myself, is very excited to see what Ms. Nyong’o will be wearing to this season’s awards shows.

As far as the Golden Globes 2014 go, her stunning tomato-hued gown with scarlet undertones is undoubtedly one of the best looks of the night. And if you can tear your eyes away from that fiery ensemble for just a moment, you’re sure to fall in love with the rest of her look.

The daring buzz-like cut is not for the fainthearted, that’s for sure! But with her bone structure, gorgeous features and dazzling smile Lupita sure makes the look work. I picked this hair statement as one of my favourites from the night simply because it just goes to show that a daring, unconventional hairstyle can look every bit as glamorous and beautiful as the classics. It’s all about loving your own look: do that right and everyone else will follow!

3. Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel with her trademark bangs and baby-blue peepers was another one of the evening’s trendsetters. Zooey’s romantic side updo marked quite a departure from tradition though, for the New Girl actress is known for wearing her hair loose. This lovely side updo has a distinctly romantic, Victorian vibe to it and makes for a great look for any occasion so whether you’re attending a gala or looking to make an impression at an important business meeting, you’re sure to be quite the hit. For a more festive take on the look you can add a large flower like Zooey here.

4. Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock is yet another star who’s been the fashion world’s favourite over this last year. With some really groovy wardrobe choices and a great performance in Gravity to her credit, Sandra Bullock’s been wooing the crowds and the paparazzi like the total pro she is.

Sandra Bullock’s side-parted, over-the-shoulder ponytail might not be quite what you expect from a major star at the Red Carpet, but that is exactly why it is so refreshing. From the elegant makeup to the classic ponytail, Sandra’s look at the 2014 Golden Globes was all about simple, refined beauty. Those who are into more creative or complex hairstyles might not be too impressed with this hairstyle but it sure is a hit with me! Nothing says “stylish” quite like an effortless hairdo that stands out amongst a bevy of other trends!

5. Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence is such a bright, young woman and it really is no surprise that she’s the global media’s darling. This young actress is not only super talented and super gorgeous, she also has such a refreshingly fun and unapologetic personality. And she’s sure bringing it through with her gorgeous pixie cut. Jennifer’s decision to crop her hair short made one of the strongest beauty statements of the year and it continues to be one of the industry’s favourites.

For the Golden Globes, Jennifer’s spunky pixie cut was styled into a smoother, shinier version of its usual, messy self. If you’re planning to get your hair cut into a spiky pixie, take a leaf out of Jennifer Lawrence’s book for when you have to attend formal functions and you’re worried about your hairdo not being sophisticated enough.

Michelle Dockery Heads-Up For Golden Globes 2014

Guess who’s all caught up in Golden Globes excitement?  Today, I got up early to style British brunette Michelle Dockery. The Downtown Abbey star chose a sexy bouncy and curly style to frame and flatter her legendary cheekbones. She’s been teasing Hollywood reporters all weekend leading up to the Globes, hinting at her choice of dress.  I was one of the lucky few who got a sneak peek, and after seeing her gorgeous embroidered cream-colored Oscar de la Renta gown, I chose to keep it modern with a looser, more playful, slightly disheveled take on the often-rigidly Edwardian styles she wears in her role as Lady Mary.

And while Lady Mary may have been coming slightly unraveled due to personal tragedies in this season’s spotline, I’m thrilled to have been behind the scenes helping Michelle herself look just as great as ever.

You can easily recreate this look at home. Just follow these steps:

1.     Apply some volumizing  spray to the root area of your towel-dried hair, then blow-dry using a round brush to create the perfect foundation and loose volume that this style needs.

2.     Once your hair is completely dry, divide it into smaller sub sections (roughly 1 by 1 inch) and and curl each section individually, starting from the back. I would recommend using a 1 or 1 1/2-inch curling iron that lets you adjust the temperature to the needs of your hair and work on a low / medium heat setting.

3.     Work your way in horizontal sections until all hair is curled.

4.     Apply a small drop of a hair oil or shine serum into your hands and run your fingers gently through your hair to break up the curls, leaving a few loose strands around the face to create a slightly messy texture so it has a “lived in,” unforced  feeling.

5.     Once you are happy with your shape & texture, mist with a flexible hairspray to ensure that your style will last.

Kate Beckinsale Presents In Style At The Golden Globes 2014

This has been quite the day for British lovelies.  It’s always a highlight when I get the chance to work with Kate Beckinsale, and today was no exception. It’s easy to see why she’s consistently ranked one of the world’s most desirable women.  With her wholesome English rose good looks, Kate can get away with quite a bit of edginess in her hairstyle, so we went with a slightly punk-inspired  look.

In her Zuhair Murad gown, Kate sailed down the red carpet in classic style, turning heads all the way up to the stage. I’m just so thrilled to have been part of the glitz and can’t wait to style this fabled brunette again.

Start by spraying a volumizing root spray directly on to the roots of damp hair. The spray will help add body and hold and it’s a great way to set the style in. It’ll also make hair more pliable and easier to work with.

Start blow drying your hair using a skeleton brush; use your fingers to create texture and additional volume. Once the hair is fully dry, separate into a horseshoe shaped section (the part between both temples & your crown area) and clip the top section away.

Pull the bottom section into a low, side ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic. Then coil & wrap the tail into a messy bun.  You can even tug a few strands out to create naturally falling bits and to loosen the bun. Secure it with bobby pins.

Take the hair from the top section and backcomb the roots using Boar Bristle Teasing Brush to maximize the volume at the crown and create a slightly disheveled texture.

Secure the top section into the existing, loose bun with bobby pins.

Mist the hair with Hairspray  to add shine and long-lasting hold. Spray a little on finger tips and work it into the single strands to help define. Secure the final look with a few more pins. You’re good to go!

Elisabeth Moss At The Audi Globes Kick Off Party

Elisabeth Moss  was definitely the centre of attention at an Audi party to celebrate the start of Golden Globes weekend in West Hollywood last night. Her black jumpsuit  was accessorized with a black Edie Parker clutch with a green punk safety-pin detail, Jennifer Meyer jewels, and black satin Rupert Sanderson ‘Elba’ pumps. We decided to style her hair in a loose, sexy (un)done style.

To get such a look you need to curl a lot but not all of your hair. Use a straightener or a medium sized curling iron that allows you to set the heat to according to the needs of your hair. Braun's Satin hair range has been designed for that. To get a perfectly messy bob, follow the scheme: curl one large section, leave one small section curl-free. However, you should apply a heat-protect spray on all of your hair, so that all its sections have the same texture. Wella Thermal Image Heat protection Spray works great for that.

Work your way around your head, and once you are done, run your fingers through your hair to mix and mess up the curls and curl-free tresses. If naturally your hair is absolutely straight, make the “uncurled” locks a bit wavy with the help of curling tools, but draw it mild! To finish the style, fix your hair with flexible hairspray, such as Wellaflex.

Sarah Michelle Gellar for People Choice Awards

You’ve probably heard already that Sarah Michelle Gellar won her first People’s Choice Award last night for her show The Crazy Ones (if not, read about it here).  I was there, too – behind the scenes, creating her new bouffant look and color, an almost-platinum blonde that Perez Hilton called “Gorge!... flawless with just the right amount of dazzle.”

All of Hollywood is abuzz about her grand entrance.  Glamour magazine is even wondering if, along with Britney Spears’ new lighter look, this is going to trigger a widespread mad dash into the ashy-blonde shades in the months to come.

Receiving her award, Sarah was thankful to all her old Buffy cast and crew for being a big part of her success.  It was a delight to work with her, and always a pleasure to be a small part of such a great team.
